Call for 5th grader baby photos and yearbook orders!

It’s a Maplewood yearbook tradition! Until the end of February you can submit a baby or toddler pic of your 5th grader to: maplewoodesyearbook@gmail.com You can also include a brief congratulatory message, inspirational quote, or something completely silly—it’s up to you! Browse yearbooks from prior years if you need some ideas. If you need a paper pic scanned, please email that address and I’ll contact you to get it scanned. And it’s not too late to order yearbooks! Leave $20 in cash or check (made out to Maplewood PTA) in the office. Be sure to write your child’s name and teacher on the envelope. Questions? ♥February 14th♥ 5th grade Valentine Party!  We will be having a Valentine Party next Wednesday afternoon.  Please bring Valentine’s to share.  Also, please remember your manners and bring one for each of our 32 students.  Names and correct spelling on other side of this newsletter.  Feel free to make your own mailbox at home.

February Monthly Genre:  Musicians! Either book or web research ok - sources must be cited.

Writing:  Research for musician speech.  See google classroom for details.

Math:  Unit 6 Post-Test was taken.  Next up:  Division of fractions by whole numbers and division of whole numbers by fractions.

Fieldtrip Feb. 16:  Once again we are heading to Northwest Children’s Theatre to see Chitra:  The Girl Prince.  Featuring epic martial arts sequences and a wide range of dance styles, Chitra tells the story of a warrior princess who struggles to stay true to herself while balancing her responsibility to her people with the call of true love.  Perfect for Valentine season, eh?

BizTown Feb. 27:  Is right around the corner!  We have begun preparing for our big day when we simulate being a citizen of BizTown and a productive member of society.  Students learn banking, work ethics, and work hard!

Math:  Unit 6 = Fractions, Decimals & Percents.  This week we focused on fractions and their percent and decimal equivalents.   ¼     25%    0.25   *    ⅕     20%     0.20   

Scientific Method:  First experiment?  Swingers complete.  Second?  Skittles.

Google Classroom:  Many of your students assignments can be viewed directly in google classroom.  As their parent you were ‘invited’ to join last fall.  If you need another ‘invite’ let me know.  Assignments are often scored, graded and commented on directly into students’ account.  

February Genre: Musicians

Musician Report

Report Due: Friday, March 3, 2018

This month, instead of our regular genre project, you will study a musician, band or group
of your choice.

Choose one musician or band to study, conduct research, and prepare to give a 1.5 - 3 minute
speech on them to the class (please no longer than 3 minutes).  You will be allowed to have note
cards when presenting your speech.  Make sure the musician or band you choose has information
available!

Along with your speech there will be a creative display assigned and completed in class.  There
will be at least two in-class opportunities to research your musician as well as one night of
homework set aside.

After presenting your speech you will be able to share a clip of your musician's music.
Please make sure this clip is school appropriate. You can bring a CD or we can look up the
clip on YouTube.

Your speech must be typed into google classroom AND  include information about:

• their childhood(s)
• how they got their start
• famous songs and successes
• any other interesting facts!

  Award Winning Books: Scrapbook Page Book Report

January 31st we will present our wonderful, creative, and colorful scrapbook page book reports!  Carefully look over the rubric below so you know what is required.  

I can’t wait to see what you come up with!

	Letter in Envelope	6	Maximum points for using letter format (including properly addressed envelope) and at least 5 complete sentences discussing an issue in story.
	Journal Page	6	Maximum points for a dated journal entry (in a mini-journal format) discussing  a key character’s thoughts and feelings about an event.
	3 Quotes	6	Maximum 6 points for quoting 3 different passages that capture BIG IDEAS from the story.  Page numbers included where it’s found!
	Character Description	10	Maximum 10 points for folded brochure with 2 character descriptions including character name, basic description, and MOTIVATION in the story.
	Illustration	5	Maximum points for neat, colorful illustration(s) of a character, event, or something symbolic.
	Neatness	5	Overall neatness of text, graphics and poster.  Poster should be creative, colorful, little white space, and  free of stray marks, tears, etc.
	ON TIME	+5	+5 points if ON TIME.   If late, no points will be awarded, and 1 point will be deducted for each day late.
	TOTAL POINTS	50 points	45-50 points  - Exceeds 35-44 – Meets 30-34 – Close to Meeting 29 or below – Not Meeting (must revise!)
